Dental Technology

Taking care of your mouth is essential for keeping it healthy. Brushing and flossing every day is a crucial part of optimal oral health. In addition to your daily oral care routine, professional dental care is also important. This includes routine cleanings and exams as well as appointments to diagnose and treat symptoms you may be experiencing. To provide you with the highest quality of care, College Hill Dental uses some of the latest dental technology.

Digital X-rays

Digital X-rays by dentist in Eugene, OR.

X-rays are a crucial component of your dental exams. These images help to show us the hidden areas of your mouth, allowing us to spot many different types of issues such as:

•  Cavities between teeth.
•  Root fractures.
•  Bone damage and bone loss.
•  Cysts and abscesses.
•  Impacted wisdom teeth.
•  Tumors in the jaw.

Today, we take these images using digital technology. With digital X-rays, we place an electronic sensor in your mouth. This sensor is attached to a computer. When the image is taken, it shows up almost immediately on a computer monitor. The images do not need to be developed in a separate darkroom. Specialized software allows us to take a much closer look at the structures in your mouth to examine the smallest details.

Additionally, there is much less radiation involved with digital X-rays. In most cases, radiation exposure is reduced by up to 95%.

Ultrasonic Scaler

Ultrasonic scalers used by dentist in Eugene, OR.

A scaler is a tool that is used to remove plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris from your teeth. Traditionally, this has been done with a metal tool that required us to manually scrape the tooth surfaces. While effective, this tool could cause some trauma to your gums. Today, we can more effectively clean your teeth with an ultrasonic scaler. This tool uses low-frequency soundwaves that vibrate against your teeth. The vibrations break up even the most stubborn buildup so that it can easily be removed. This allows for a more thorough cleaning that is also much gentler on your sensitive gum tissue.

There are two types of ultrasonic scalers. A magnetostrictive scaler has a head that vibrates in a circular motion at speeds between 25,000 and 30,000 cycles per second. A piezoelectric scaler has a head that vibrates back and forth. This ultrasonic scaler moves at speeds of 28,000 to 36,000 cycles per second. An attached nozzle allows us to spray water to wash away debris or to administer an antibacterial agent to help kill any lingering bacteria.

Intraoral Camera

Intraoral cameras are offered by dentist in Eugene, OR.
An important component of your dental exams is the visual inspection of the structures in your mouth. With visual examinations, we can assess your teeth, your gums, and your other intraoral tissues. While we can see a lot in your mouth with the naked eye, there are still some areas of your mouth that are a bit harder to look at. Traditionally, a small metal mirror has provided a better look at harder to see areas of your mouth. Today, we can take an even closer look with an intraoral camera.

An intraoral camera is a small handheld wand with an optical camera on one end. The other end is attached to a computer. As the camera is moved around, the structures in your mouth are shown in real time on a monitor. We can also take stills and manipulate the images for a more in-depth look. You do not need to have your mouth wide open the entire time. This can make dental exams a much more comfortable, pleasant experience.

Dental technology has greatly improved the quality of the care that we can provide. As a result, we can help you maintain optimal oral health and ensure a positive patient experience. For more information on the technology in our office, give College Hill Dental a call today at (541) 393-2575.
