I can feel your eyebrows raised up in question all the way over to our office! I know what you're thinking, 'really? Seaweed?' and the answer is YES!
But what is it about seaweed that can improve your oral health, and how exactly are you supposed to get it? Let's explore that a little here today.
Seaweed contains an enzyme called bacillus licheniformis which has been proven to be beneficial to your oral health. This enzyme has been isolated by researches and they've shown that can help keep your teeth free from plaque in between your visits to our office for your twice yearly cleanings. But how?
According to research adding seaweed microbes to dental care products such as mouth rinse and toothpaste has proven to add extra protection from tooth decay by stripping the bacteria out of plaque. The enzyme cuts through plaque and bacteria separating it from the teeth at which point it can be easily removed by normal brushing and flossing.
Since periodontal disease is on the rise scientists are also busy looking for ways to rid our mouths from that harmful bacteria. The bacteria sit in the mouth and will grow infecting the gums. It doesn't take long for that to infiltrate your circulatory system and further damage your body.
Finding toothpaste that contains seaweed isn't as difficult as one may think! The American Dental Association states that many types of toothpaste already contain seaweed as a thickening agent, so make sure that your fluoridated toothpaste is approved by the ADA!
