What Is a Veneer?

Dental veneers are thin shells that essentially serve as a “false front” for your tooth. They are custom-made to fit over your tooth’s front side (the side you and everyone else will see). They are veneering, similarly to a thin protective layer over a substrate (Hence, the name).

What Are Veneers Made Of?

A veneer is commonly constructed from wafer-thin porcelain or a composite resin that we carefully model to match the color of your natural teeth as accurately as possible. No detail is spared to help it blend in. Both resin and ceramic options are a favored choice, but veneers can also be made from metal or a combination of porcelain and metal.

Is It Easy or Difficult to Have Veneers Applied?

The length and complexity of the procedure depend on how much of your tooth first needs to be removed & replaced (Ex- How much of it is damaged). Let’s compare it to if you decided to get a crown instead, for instance. Veneers are usually the more conservative of the two and require only a thin layer of your tooth to be taken off. This smaller amount requiring removal makes the veneer much easier to position, meaning that the procedure typically takes less time.

Pros vs. Cons of Getting Veneers

While it is a great choice to consider getting a veneer, no oral procedure is perfect or without potential risks in addition to the benefits. This is why it’s important to understand exactly what you are getting into if/when you choose to have veneers applied. These include but are not limited to:

•  Pros: Veneers are long-lasting.
•  Great solution for issues like severely stained teeth, chips or minor cracks in teeth, small gaps between your teeth, and tooth misalignment or abnormal spacing.
•  Restores and improves your smile’s color and symmetry.

•  Cons: With few exceptions, once applied, veneers will always require covering. They are permanent and cannot be reversed once applied.
•  A small minority of patients report their veneers to appear too large or bulky, but this can easily be corrected by Dr. Paskalev without issue once application is completed.

Remember, if you’re curious about veneers or want to schedule an appointment and discuss your options, call College Hill Dental at (541) 393-2575.
