All good things come to an end, as they say, and that includes tooth restorations like dental crowns. Whether you’ve just gotten a new one, or you’ve had yours for a while, here are some telltale signs that it may be time to replace your dental crown.

Your Gum Line Has Receded

If you are experiencing receding gums around your dental crown, this is an important sign to have it replaced. That’s because the bacteria that swarm around your crowned tooth could raise your risk of gum disease. Thus, if this sounds familiar, speak to your dentist about replacing your crown and evaluating your gums for periodontal disease.

Wear and Tear

Dental crowns are tough, but not indestructible. If you notice any signs of wear and tear on yours, speak to your dentist about possible replacement. Excessive erosion on restorations could indicate a condition like bruxism (teeth grinding) or simply that it’s time to replace it due to regular use.

Pain or Swelling

If you ever notice any pain, inflammation, or swelling around your crowned tooth, contact your dentist as soon as possible. This could be a sign of tooth infection, or that the crown may be damaged or is in need of replacement.

Your Crown Has Visible Damage

Dental crowns can be made of many materials, including metals and porcelain. Though they are designed to be sturdy and durable, they can sometimes get damaged. Porcelain especially can become chipped or cracked. In some cases, your dentist may be able to repair your crown. However, it may need to be replaced if the damage is too severe.

Your Crown Is 10+ Years Old

Even if your crown isn’t showing any signs of damage or wear, it could still be time to replace it if it’s ten years old or older. While it is possible for a crown to last longer than 15 years, it could need to be redone as soon as five years if it is damaged or worn. The best way to determine this is by visiting your dentist and having it examined in person and via X-ray.

Remember, dental crowns weren’t meant to last forever, but it’s not always easy to know exactly when it’s time to upgrade. If you have any questions or concerns about yours, speak to your dentist today so you can enjoy the benefits of a healthy, beautifully restored smile for years to come!
