How to Get an A+ on Your Next Dental Exam

August 21, 2025

A smiling student

With schools around the country back in session, now is the perfect time to “brush up” on your oral health and get ready to ace your next dental exam. Here are some tips for getting the new semester off on the right foot and establishing some healthy habits for this year and beyond!

Rest Up

Now that the sun is setting earlier, it’s time to start heading to bed sooner, too. Establishing an earlier nighttime routine should always include time for oral hygiene. Be sure you and your family are brushing their teeth and flossing each night before you hit the hay. Another smile-saving bonus of an earlier bedtime? It can help provide more energy during the day, so you’re less likely to need to fall back on bad habits like sugary energy drinks or snacks to stay alert.

Now that your family routine is different, take a few minutes to check-in with them and see how they’re doing with their oral hygiene. Review their brushing and flossing technique, make sure their brushes are in good condition, and that they have plenty of toothpaste and dental floss to care for their smile. If their tools and techniques don’t make the grade, help demonstrate proper form, or stock up on supplies to ensure they’re well equipped to protect their teeth and gums this semester.

Pack Your Bags

If you pack a lunch or snack for your child, be sure to make healthy choices that will keep their teeth healthy and strong. Avoid foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates, and instead reach for fresh fruits and veggies, dairy products, whole grains, and lean proteins. If they purchase a lunch at school, help them by making smart recommendations and be sure to provide them with a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day.

Schedule Your Exams

While it may seem early in the semester for testing, it’s never the wrong time to schedule your preventive dental exams!  The American Dental Association recommends you visit your dentist for an exam and cleaning every six months. If it’s time to book yours, call your dentist today to lower your family’s risk of missing school or activities due to a preventable dental emergency.

Remember, back to school season can be chaotic, but don’t let the change in your routine prevent you from taking care of your smile. Book your preventive dental exam and cleaning with your dentist today so your smile makes the grade all year long!
