October Is National Dental Hygiene Month: It Is Time to Check Your Habits!

When most people think of October, they automatically think about things like pumpkins, cozy fall outfits, and month-end festivities. But they might not know that this month is also National Dental Hygiene Month! That makes it the perfect time to pause and reflect on your habits to determine if you are doing all you can to maintain a healthy and clean smile. In this blog post, you will get some reminders on the best practices for maintaining your oral wellness.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

You have probably heard that brushing twice a day is one of the most important habits for your oral health. When you brush in the morning, you remove plaque and bacteria that build up overnight. Brushing before you go to bed helps prevent food particles and acids from damaging your teeth while you sleep.

Select a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and use gentle, circular motions to clean each surface of your teeth. Spend at least two minutes every time you brush, and do not forget to reach the back teeth and your tongue.

Floss Daily

Flossing every day is just as important as brushing. Dental floss cleans places between the teeth and along the gumline where your toothbrush cannot reach. This habit is essential for keeping cavities and gum disease at bay!

Use about 18 inches of floss, winding most around one finger and a small amount around the other. Guide the floss gently between your teeth, curving it in a C-shape around each tooth and gently sliding it up and down. Try to set aside a specific time every day for flossing so it becomes a regular part of your routine; many people find that doing it before brushing their teeth each evening works well for them.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

You should attend a checkup and cleaning every six months. During these appointments, your dentist checks for early signs of problems like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. Professional cleanings remove tartar (the hardened form of plaque) that home care cannot tackle. You can also receive personalized advice about your dental habits so you can optimize your daily care routine.

Use the Right Oral Hygiene Products

Choosing the right products makes a big difference in your oral care routine! Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Select a toothpaste with fluoride, which helps strengthen your enamel and fight decay.
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush is gentle on your gums and effective at cleaning teeth.
  • Mouthwash can help reduce bacteria and freshen your breath, but pick one that fits your needs, such as a formula for sensitive teeth or gum health.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn.
  • If flossing is challenging for you, you might try a water flosser instead.

Ask your dental team for personalized tips on which products may be best for your unique smile.

There are many habits that can support your mouth’s health and cleanness. Start with the basics discussed in this article and go from there. A solid routine may reward you with a confident, pain-free smile that lasts for many years!
